General Guidance: Your completed papers should be four typed, doubled-spaced pages, with 1 inch margins in Times New Roman, twelve-point font.. I will be looking for at least four full pages of written content (graphs, pictures, works cited page, etc., do not count as part of the four pages).
The paper must draw from class materials and our textbook.
Any outside sources not from our class materials/textbook must be properly cited and include a reference list of all sources utilized in your paper, as well as in-text citations for all quotes and paraphrases in the paper.
It is important to not use large quotes but to paraphrase into your own words instead (while still giving proper credit to the original author(s) by providing proper citations). Please use MLA format for all in-text citations and your reference list.
Do not include a cover page but the paper should have a title.
Paper Topic: Please analyze a political issue of your choice and connect the chosen issue to the Bardes et. al. textbook and class lectures. Textbook connections need in-text citations with page numbers. The topic that you choose must be relevant to contemporary American politics, political in nature, and the analysis provided must define the situation and explain its political implications. Since we are an American politics class, the topic chosen must be domestic politics and not foreign policy. Further, the topic must be tied in to one of the three major themes that we covered at the beginning of this class. The class themes or textbook chapter topics cannot be your chosen paper topic.

Task: Read the following two articles on conducting literature reviews:
Iain McMenamin, Teaching Students to Review the Literature, Political Science and Politics, Vol. 39, No. 1 (Jan., 2006), pp. 133-135
Jeffrey W. Knopf , ‘Doing a Literature Review’, Political Science and Politics, Vol. 39, No. 1 (Jan., 2006)

2: Focus on Knopf’s article: a) Summarise in bullet point form the questions that a good literature review should ask, according to Knopf.; b) explain the difference between a literature review and an annotated bibliography (concentrating on the issue of critical synthesis). Task: Please read the two sources: Patrick White, “Developing Research Question

Task: Please read the two sources:
Patrick White, “Developing Research Questions: a guide for students, researcher and pratitioners”, (Palgrave, 2008), Chapter 2 “What makes a research question” p.33-59.
Peter Burnham, Karin Gilland Lutz, Wyn Grant, and Zig Layton-Henry, Research Methods in Politics, 2nd ed. (Hampshire: Palgrave, 2008), Ch. 11 ‘Ethics and Political Research’
Please go back to your post-it with your proposed question and consider again how it compares with what your read in this phase of the dissertation module.
Is the question one you are still interested in and one you think worthy of devoting your time and energy to?
Remember, don’t worry if you are unsure – research is an iterative process.
Respond: Please post your updated question to the forum, and take time to read other people’s contributions.
Maybe someone else’s ‘form of words’ will be helpful in trying to get your point across.
Tip: keeping your Post-It explanation to hand/in your head will enable you to quickly explain your purpose to your friends and colleagues. That kind of erudite explanation, admittedly on a larger scale, is crucial for high quality research.
Outcome: You will have formulated, in draft form, an overarching question that may form the basis of your future dissertation, (equally it may not ultimately be the question, or even the subject area you address, but you will have gone through the process of formulating a research question).
In doing this, you will have honed your writing, research and analytical skills.
